Priscilla Ahn Brings Her American Folk Tunes to Korea

Photobucket

The singer-songwriter Priscilla Ahn is a rising star in the U.S. pop music scene. Born to a Korean mother and an American father who was a soldier stationed in Korea, Ahn (24) is signed to famous jazz label Blue Note and has released her first album titled "A Good Day." U.S. music journal "All Music Guide" gave it four out of five stars, saying Ahn's soft and fresh tone of voice suits folk music well. She gave her first Korean concert at Sangsang Madang in Seogyo-dong, Seoul on Thursday night.

"I'm told I lived briefly in Korea when I was one year old, but I have no memories of that. But I've visited Korea several times, so I am familiar with the country. I grew up eating Korean food thanks to my mother, and I still love Korean food the best," she says.
She changed her last name from Hartranft to Ahn, her mother's maiden name, after she became a musician. "My real last name is difficult to pronounce and write. My mother's maiden name is easy, and I know it also means peace," she says. When told that Ahn also can mean "stable," she replied, "Ah, that's also a good meaning."

Ahn decided to become a professional musician when a teacher told her it would be better for her to pursue a career in music rather than go to university. "I don't regret that I didn't go to university," she says. "I can go whenever I want to. If I hadn't chosen music then, my dream wouldn't have come true now. I wouldn't be where I am now." She has given eight concerts in three cities in Japan and now says she is "thrilled" to meet her Korean audience.
"I really enjoy writing songs and lyrics and singing them. I would love to play music for the rest of my life," she says. "I'm going to come back as a more famous musician the next time."

Erin McCarley mentions Priscilla in her blog...

Erin McCarley mentions Priscilla in her blog of the Hotel Cafe Tour on TeenVogue. Here's the clip/picture about Priscilla:

Dallas, TX - House of Blues
"Welcome Ingrid and Priscilla! The five of us are about to travel through Texas together which is super special for me. Dallas happens to be my hometown. Ingrid and Priscilla both bring such a special thing to this tour. Ingrid needs to star in her own SNL skit and writes some of the most relatable songs I have ever heard. Priscilla is one of the sweetest souls. It shines through in the way she lives her day, the way she speaks, and through her music. She's a badass on the kazoo too! I had a great time seeing friends and family tonight in Dallas...thanks for coming out to see us!"

&if you may have heard, Priscilla has 26 stitches in her right arm! So, she's cancelled a bunch of her tourdates as of right now. Keep checking her myspace blog or website for more info!

Articles, articles, articles

I *loved* this article about the Hotel Cafe Tour. And the picture they featured...

It's from Paste Magazine Online.
Read it here:
http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2008/09/priscilla-ahn-and-some-of.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joshua Radin recently mentioned Priscilla's voice as working perfectly with his in an interview:

ATF: Well your voice blends better with female vocalists than anyone I’ve heard in a long time, why do you think that is?

JR: My voice tends to blend better with people whose voices are more like mine like more breathy and has more air in their voice. I don’t have one of those voices that cuts through a bunch of instruments. Someone like Priscilla Ahn who has a lot of air in her voice, our voices have always fit perfectly. Me and Celine Dion probably wouldn’t sound good together.

ATF: When you released your Unclear Skys EP last winter, your song Sky originally featured Ingrid Michaelson. When the album came out it featured Meiko. What was the reasoning for the change?

JR: We just didn’t want to release the same song. A lot of people had downloaded the song with Ingrid on it and we just wanted to make a change.

Priscilla mentioned in William Fitzsimmons interview

William Fitzsimmons (fellow Hotel Cafe tour-mate) was recently interviewed, and put a good word in for Priscilla! (:

You just wrapped playing on the “Hotel Cafe” tour. What was that like?? & any highlights or favorite moments from the tour?
William- The Hotel Cafe tour was pretty incredible. Many of the folks that were on the tour were actually friends of mine already, and those that weren’t became so rather quickly. It was a joint effort in every sense of the word. We sang on several of each others’ songs, rode in the bus together, and just made it a sort of traveling community. I’d have to say it was unique to any touring I’ve done up til this point. I don’t know that there would necessarily be ‘one’ standout moment from the tour (corny or not, there were many particilarly special moments), but if I were to pick a single one, it would probably be singing on stage with everyone during the finale each night. Can’t think of it getting much better than that.

What new music if any are you excited about??
William- I’m such a bad person to ask about the newest music, and what people are listening to at the moment because I get so attached to bands and albums that I have trouble moving on from them. A couple recent favorites would have to be Priscilla Ahn and Meiko. Very hearfelt and potent stuff; I’d definitely recommend it.

I definitely reccomend William Fitzsimmons as well! He's amazing!

Priscilla Ahn, Dream Video
by Staff 04.21.2008

Priscilla Ahn has been making a name for herself on the 2008 Hotel Cafe tour playing with the likes of Ingrid Michaelson, Joshua Radin and Cary Brothers. With her pristine vocals and affecting songwriting, Priscilla has been quietly gaining fans across the country and is now approaching the release of her debut album, A Good Day, out June 10th on Blue Note Records.
The black and white video for single, “Dream,” shows Priscilla at her best, performing alone in a bare room. Watch Priscilla single-handedly take the reigns on simultaneously looping her bird-like vocals for self-harmonizing, finger picking the guitar, and adding her own harmonica accents, and get ready to be amazed.
